Moldavian Football Champions Aimed for the Manchester United Scalp

Manchester United traveled to Moldova to play against FC Sheriff Tiraspol in the second Group E fixture that aims to make amends for their loss against Real Sociedad. But for people who thought that it is going to be smooth sailing for Manchester United, they had to think again since the Sheriff are not strangers to pulling off shocking results after they made it to the headlines with their victory over Real Madrid.

The sheriff is from the city of Tiraspool which is located in the unrecognized breakaway state of local Transnistria and takes part in the Moldovan Super Liga, the top division of the Moldovidan football league system. As of 1997, the club had been established. However, they have had a successful existence as they won 20 league titles in the last 25 years and also 11 Moldovan Cups, and 7 Moldovan Super Cups, even though they won in the same year.

They won the title in 2021-22 and it got them a place in the Champion League season’s first qualifying round where they defeated Bosnian champions Zrinjski before seeing off Maribor, the Slovenian champions in the second round, as they won both ties on aggregate. But Viktoria Plzen, the Czech Republic Champions ended their dream in the third round. However, they secured a place in the Europa League group stage by seeing off Armenian champions Pyunik in the play, before they win their opening game against Omonia Nicosia.
The sheriff has managed to grab Stjepan Tomas, the Croatian international player who won 49 caps for this country in 1998-2006 and played players, such as Fenerbahce, Dinamo Zagreb, and Rubian Kazan. So, he has won 13 titles in his 16-year-old career. But the present team doesn’t have any household names.
