NATIONS LEAGUE: MOLDOVA IN PROMOTION CONTENTION

Moldovan football has seen a lot of bad times in the past few years, but things might get back when the 2022/23 UEFA Nations League resumes next month with the senior men's team in contention to secure promotion from League D to League C.

The Moldovans are in League D for the latest edition of the UEFA Nations League. Also, they are in Group 1 of League D alongside Latvia, Andorra and Liechtenstein. After four round of games in the group, bottom team Liechtenstein and Andorra are out of the promotion picture thus leaving Moldova and leaders Latvia to fight for the sole spot available for promotion to League C. Moldovan football could be represented in League C as far as the next edition of the UEFA Nations League is concerned if the senior team could pip Latvia to promotion in Group 1 of League D.

The most crucial game to the League C promotion chase for Moldovan football is the away game against leaders Latvia next month. The two teams meet at the Daugava Stadium in Riga, Latvia on Thursday, September 22 and the game could decide the destination of the sole promotion ticket to League C from Group 1 of League D.

As things stand in Group 1 of League D, Latvia have a five-point lead over Moldova at the summit and they would take the sole promotion slot by avoiding defeat against their guests. Only an away win will keep Moldovan football in contention for a place in League C for the next edition of the UEFA Nations League. With an away win over Latvia, the Moldovans can take the battle for a place in League C to the final day in Group 1 of League D (Sunday, September 25). On the final day, Moldova play hosts to Liechtenstein, while Latvia are guests of Andorra.
