Moldova will kick-off their 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign against Wales on the 5th of September with a match against Wales.
They will be playing their first game away in the Welsh capital. Moldova has been placed in the Group D. Other teams in the group consist of Austria, Serbia, Ireland and Georgia. This is by far one of the toughest groups and Moldova will have to produce their best football if they want to have a chance in the qualifying campaigns. 3 of the teams in the group are participating in the Euros 2016, and this shows the quality of the group.
Moldova, who has yet to qualify for an international tournament, is more concerned about improving the general level of their football at the moment. The government wants to give every player the chance to practice football at the highest level in order to boost the national team. At the moment the team is enjoying a rather tough period, but there are also some encouraging results here and there.
Their last friendly was against Croatia before the Croatian team has out for the Euro 2016. Moldova played decently in the game, and they managed to keep the Croatia team at bay. Indeed, Croatia is considered as being one of the favorites to win the Euros, and the Moldova manager will be happy that his team managed to play well against such opposition.
They will be frustrated to have conceded a goal in the early stage of the game, though. Indeed, Croatia managed to open the score in the 9th minute thanks to Andrej Kramaric. The latter played in the Premier League for Leicester City benefited from good work from his teammates before unleashing an excellent shot.
Although Croatia will get some occasions later on during the game, they will fail to beat the Moldovan goalkeeper and the match will end up 1-0 for Croatia.
