Maribor showcased great quality in the first qualifying round as they proved to be resilient defensively in order to secure their place in this stage of the competition. The Slovenian team were drawn against Soligorsk in that round, and they did not concede a goal in either game, which is something that will have brought plenty of confidence to the squad.
The first leg of that round was one that Maribor played in front of their own fans, which led to a goalless draw, but they followed that up with a dominant 2-0 victory to give themselves a chance of qualifying for the competition.

MOLDOVA RETURN TO WINNING WAYS

Moldova are back to winning ways following the victory over Andorra in their latest game in Group D1 of the current UEFA Nations League. Moldovan football features in the first group in League D alongside Andorra, Latvia and Liechtenstein.The Moldovans played hosts to Andorra on the back of a run of two matches without a win. They were able to end the winless run with the 2-1 victory over their guestsduring the game played last week Tuesday.

A pair of penalties either side of the half-time interval was enough to put smiles on the faces of Moldovan football fans at the expense of the Andorrans. Mihail Caicamov scored the first of the two Moldova penalties on 26 minutes to give the hosts the lead before Atletico Corazon FC of Spain midfielder Marcio Vieira levelled proceedings for Andorra in the fourth minute of first half added time.

MOLDOVAN OLYMPIAN TATIANA MOVES TO SOUTH CAROLINA FROM LOUISVILLE

Tatiana Salcutan, an Olympian from Moldova, is transferring to the University of South Carolina. She is leaving Louisville, where she swam with the Cardinals for the 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 seasons. Salcutan is a backstroke specialist. She competed at the 2021 Olympics in the 100 and 200 meter backstrokes, representing Moldova.

During her first year in Louisville, Salcutan competed for the Cardinals at the NCAA Championships in two events. She finished 20th in the 200 backstroke with a 1:54.19 and 43rd in the 100 backstroke with a 53.56. At the 2022 NCAA Championships, she tied her 2021 time in the 100 backstroke (53.56), which put her in 53rd place. In the 200 back, she ended up 48th with a 1:56.68.

MOLDOVA RELEGATED FROM NATION LEAGUE C

Moldovan football suffered another major setback after the senior national team relegation from League C to League D in the UEFA Nations League thanks to their penalty shootout defeat to Kazakhstan in the play-offs to fight for a spot in League C.


The Moldovans were in League C for the last edition of the UEFA Nations League won by world champions France. They were in League C3 alongside Greece, Kosovo and Slovenia. At the end of proceedings in the group, Moldova finished last behind Kosovo, Greece and Slovenia. The Slovenians were promoted to League B after winning the group ahead of Greece with a tally of 14 points. Slovenia were able to gain promotion to League B thanks to their ten-point advantage over the Greek team. Greece and Kosovo finished with 12 points and five points respectively. Moldovan football was well represented through the Moldova senior team. It must be pointed out that Moldovan football didn’t give a good account of itself after Moldova finished last in Group F with one point from ten games. Moldova would certainly not be one of the 32 nations at the World Cup 2022 tournament in Qatar later this year after they failed to move past the first round of the qualifiers as far as the European region is concerned. Moldovan football won’t be represented in Qatar as a result.


At the draw for the first round, Moldovan football got Group F alongside teams such as Austria, Israel, Scotland, Faroe Islands and Denmark. Moldovan football avoided the big teams, but still face a big hurdle to finish in the top two positions that would at least put them in contention for a place in Qatar. All the teams were aware at the start of the first round of qualifiers in the European section that the top team in each group will secure a place at Qatar 2022, while the team in second place will need to fight for a place in Qatar via the play-offs.
